Makoto Tanijiri Design

Provided the spirit of affection is meant to diminish the distance between an object and its owner, I wanted to create a product that appeals to human instinct and wants to own, use, and communicate with others through the ownership. When the action of smoking becomes smoke-free, there must be something new born instead of smoke, like the sound that exists without form but connects people to people and people to nature. By designing such relationship, smoking action will trigger new communication through which we will come to feel intangible richness.

谷尻 誠

Born in1974 in Hiroshima, Tanijiri, architect and founder of Suppose Design Office is based in Tokyo and Hiroshima. Tanijiri works in a variety of project fields including housing, commercial space, venue structure, landscape, product, and installation. Currently teaches at Anabuki Design College in Hiroshima and Hiroshima Jogakuin University. Received Award: Modern Decoration International Media Prize Annual Commercial Award 2009 (Shanghai / China) / commendation 2009 (London / UK) / THE INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURE AWARD 2010 (Chikago / USA) / DFA AWARD 2011 and other prominent awards.

While smoking tends to be seen negatively, it also has positive role as communication tool connecting smokers. Rather than being mere substitute for smoking refrained environment, smoke-free cigarettes can be identified as effective tool for encouraging such positive side of smoking as connecting smokers and nonsmokers. We assumed this item to be sent as gift between dating or married couples. The Message of “Please refrain from emitting smoke when you are with me at home” is contained within the action of wiping the chimney off the house.

Founded in 2008 by Mayuko Tsunoda and Satoshi Hasegawa, graduates of Musashino Art University, the design unit meaning “tout le monde” in Japanese, works between wide and borderless realms of design with “by the world, of the world, and for the world” concept. Received Good Design Award amongst other prominent awards. Appointed design director of NEWSED and director of MONOPURI.
